HISTORY

Deborah Main Designs’ studio is celebrating 15 years in business.  The inspiration behind the business really started with Deborah Main’s background, and continues to guide her decisions.

While growing up in New England and New York’s Hudson River Valley, she was surrounded by beautiful textiles, antiques, jewelry and other treasures that had been passed down in her family.  During her childhood, family travels to Europe – Spain, Italy, Switzerland, France and England – afforded her the opportunity to learn about, and become intrigued by, all forms of art and design.  Being able to experience and immerse herself in centuries of color, texture, fine craftsmanship, and history became an integral part of Deborah’s life, instilling in her a great love and appreciation for beauty and fine art.

In college, she studied voice at Berklee College of Music in Boston and later transferred to the University of Texas at Austin to earn her BA.  Fascinated by designs and textiles of the past, she immersed myself in color and texture seeking out vintage dresses and accessories to enhance her performances of classical jazz music. These life experiences laid the foundation for Deborah’s artwork and are reflected in the layers and depth of her extraordinary designs.

After graduate school and a lengthy illness, Deborah started attending art openings and tried oil painting. She was enthralled with mixing colors and soon wanted to be an artist, but wasn’t sure what her medium would be. In 1999, while remodeling her home, she experienced a profound artistic epiphany at a luxury fabric store. She soon fell in love with luxurious textiles and vintage French trim. All she had to do now was learn how to sew!

In 2004, Deborah answered an Open Call for Designers at The Garden Room boutique in Austin to present samples of her work to a panel of judges. With excellent feedback she opened the Deborah Main Designs’ studio that same year and started specializing in luxury artisan pillows. Retailers and clients called her the pillow lady, but soon enough, while pursuing her passion for pillows, she was dubbed The Pillow Goddess by Houston House and Home.

In 2019, Deborah’s award-winning design studio celebrates 15 years in business, an exciting journey in art and design. The studio is re-branding as “The Pillow Goddess by Deborah Main” with this new website. Immensely grateful for incredible customer support over the years, Deborah looks forward to continuing to serve you, so that you too can experience, and be inspired by, The Pillow Goddess magic.
