Oh boy, is this going to be a fantastic weekend in Austin for architecture and design enthusiasts, as it’s the 12th Annual 2020 Austin Modern Home Tour, Saturday, Feb 22nd. You do not want to miss it, and, just in case you were thinking of running those boring errands, instead, I share 5 reasons you’ll be inspired to attend this weekend’s Austin Tour.

Every year, I look forward to February, because it’s the month that Austin kicks off an incredible year of the fantastic Modern Home Tour Series all across the country.  From Austin and Houston to San Diego and Vancouver, there’s a tour in a U.S. city for everyone. Our focus this week, is on the pioneer of them all, the Austin Modern Home Tour, happening this Saturday, Feb. 22nd, from 10 – 6. Please mark it on your calendar and purchase tickets, with The Pillow Goddess discount, HERE.

When a love for modern takes off

Starting in 2009 in Austin, Texas, it began with a simple shared passion for modern architecture and design. The original Tour, to showcase local architectural talent by opening homes in Austin to the public, was conceived by Krisstina Wise of Goodlife Luxury, and developed and produced by the Modern Architecture + Design Society.

As a result, the shared desire to connect those who love modern design with some hidden gems in favorite cities, the Modern Home Tour Series has grown into annual tours in 8 exciting cities:

  • Austin
  • Houston
  • Seattle
  • Portland
  • Silicon Valley
  • Vancouver
  • DC Metro
  • San Diego

That passion has blossomed into an architecture and design community all across the country that share ideas, propose innovation, and showcase some of the finest modern homes in North America. Some tour-goers love the Modern Home Tour Series so much they travel all across the country to see the homes in some of their favorite cities.

A formula for success

With nearly 100 events under its belt, in 25 cities from coast-to-coast, and over 10,000 attendees, the Annual Modern Home Tours have been hugely successful.  To me, there are three key factors to its success:

  1. the rare chance to see, inside and out, some of the most exciting examples of modern architecture and design one can imagine,
  2. to meet and talk with the architects, interior designers, and builders who are showcasing their skill and talent to the communities in which they work, and
  3. to ask questions and engage the minds behind-the-scenes of these astounding homes

Connecting lovers of design and architecture

In addition, by educating and inspiring tour-goers, the Tours cultivate a much broader design community and connect all of us with a shared love for modern design. It also affords the opportunity for aspiring designers, architects, builders, and design-savvy homeowners to explore building new, or remodeling, homes.

As James Leasure, founder of Modern Architecture + Design Society and the producer of the Modern Home Tour Series states it –

Through a unifying entity, established and emerging talents can collaborate, showcase their work and better connect with a worldwide audience to build better living spaces, artifacts and brands for the modern consumer.

The 5 Most Exciting Reasons You’ll Be Inspired to Attend

  1. Experience 14 curated homes that embody the unique modern architecture and aesthetic of central Texas,
  2. Meet and speak one-on-one with some of Austin’s most talented architects and designers,
  3. See breathtaking design examples of architecture, kitchens, living rooms, indoor/outdoor living, stairways, ceilings, bathrooms and more,
  4. Come away inspired with an engaged mind to tackle your own home projects and perhaps connect personally with an architect or home builder to work with,
  5. Make new friends with a shared interest in modern architecture and design.

Each of the 14 homes, both inside and out, has such unique design and architectural qualities to them. Please preview the homes HERE and map out your plan for which ones you’ll want to hit first. Take it from me, I’ve been attending the Austin Modern Home Tour for several years now, you’ll want to give yourself at minimum 4 hours because there is so much inspiration to see. Plus as I mentioned above, opportunities to meet and talk with the architects, interior designers and builders.

Here are a few of my favorite design features you won’t want to miss.

Outdoor Living – Thurman Homes at 1111 Lott Avenue

This modern home had some challenging topography. Aviation-inspired, this design with multiple wing-shaped angles is nestled in the trees for some refreshing outdoor living. Wait until you see the inside.

Entryway – Barley|Pfeiffer at 8503 Andes Cove

This home’s inspiration came from wanting to interpret a modern version of the “Prairie Style”. Wait until you see the beautiful Texas native landscaping designed to tolerate Texas heat. It’s the perfect home to raise a family.

Don’t forget the After Party!

Remember, from 4 – 8 p.m. you’ll want to include a couple of extra hours to enjoy the after party of the year at Starlight Village. You’ll also tour several Mid-century modern homes built from original vintage architectural plans.  There’s an exciting “Post-event Soiree”, kind of like a fun a Mid-century Modern Block Party, in the village that is designed in a circle around a pool. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day of inspiration and enjoy some light food and drinks with friends and talk about all the cool features you saw on the Modern Home Tour.

Thank you Jeri! Glad you enjoyed. My phone died by the time I got to Starlight, but many of the home owners opened their MCM homes. It was very cool to see how people were living. I will try to get some photos to share. Also please visit the Starlight Village Homes website to read their story and see model homes there.

What a great post about all the design goodness to be found in the homes on this tour, Deb! To note: one of the designers we featured in a previous issue of Seasonal Living Magazine lives in Starlight Village! She owns a firm there called Breathe Design. I bet some of these people know her!

Thank you Leslie! Really glad you enjoyed the post. That is so cool that one of the Seasonal Living designers you featured lives at Starlight Village. It’s such an amazing concept. We got to meet several home owners and see the homed they live in. I will definitely see if my friends know her, which I’m sure they must. Thx for sharing that!
