2020 Designhounds Influencer of the Year
I first want to introduce you to interior designer blogger, Laurel Bern, of Laurel Bern Interiors, who is the winner of the “2020 Design Hound Influencer of the Year”Award. No one can top Laurel, as you can see, she received a whopping 4,343 votes from her loyal following. Laurel writes probably the most sought-after blog in interior design Laurel Home, which you may already be following (If not, and you want to hear the truth about trends, follow Laurel’s blog HERE). She writes about EVERYTHING! Laurel no longer accepts new interior design clients, but she is the be-all and end-all authority on how to do anything wrong and everything right when it comes to interior design. Don’t take my word for it. Check out her # 1 blog post (below) on kitchens HERE.
CONGRATULATIONS Laurel!! As a result of Laurel garnering the most votes from her dedicated followers, she wins a 3-night trip to Eurococina in Milan.
Laurel’s award and the 8 category winners will be announced at KBIS on January 23rd (see invite below). I can’t wait to see who is selected. There are 100 2020 Designhounds Influencer Award Finalists, and voting is only part of the equation. Voting determines the winner, Laurel Bern, but there is a panel, along with votes, that determines the category winners. Your votes made the difference for The Pillow Goddess
I’m happy to announce that your votes propelled me to the TOP 25, (#24 on 2nd page,) and I am thrilled to have received 467 votes. Thank you so much for voting!!! And for your trust and confidence in me to bring you the best in design. Because I feel an obligation to live up to being in the TOP 25, my goal this week is to try posting 2 blogs a week so you can get even more weekly design inspiration here at the Pillow Goddess. I’m not going to promise I will succeed (it’s a trial run), because you know I’m incredibly long-winded and they’ll have to be shorter, but I’m going to give it my best shot.
Now, onto KBIS 2020 in Vegas

You’ll find plenty of kitchen design inspo on Laurel’s wonderful blog post, which is applicable today as it was a few years ago. This is one of her TOP posts on Kitchen Trends. There are too many kitchens in this post to feature, so hold onto your seat and enjoy the awful and wonderful kitchens in this link:
12 of the Hottest Kitchen Trends – Awful or Wonderful?
Angela Todd|Angela Todd Studios
KBIS for me is as much about learning new products and gaining inspiration as it is about continuing education. This year I hope to expand my knowledge of technology and luxury in kitchens and bathrooms. Additionally, for a design perspective, I have grown tired of the traditional American kitchen and bathroom look we have been boxed into in the last 20 years. I wish to take back to Oregon new perspectives that enable me to create something truly special for my clients. – Angela Todd
Below is one of Angela Todd’s most diverse kitchens custom-designed for a very specific client. Here are the brands in this striking kitchen:
Emily Clark | Clark & Co. Homes
Emily Clark, of Clark Co. & Homes, shares with us 3 different kitchen designs in the homes she designs and builds.
The Newport – California Coastal
- two-tone cabinetry and floating shelves
- waterfall quartz island
- subtly varied tile splash
- GE Cafe Appliances in matte white
The Heartland – Modern Farmhouse
- Tuxedo palette with white oak open shelving,
- custom curved hood,
- farmhouse sink, and
- Thermidor appliances, including a 48” range, steam oven, and built-in refrigerator and freezer columns.
The Tidewater – Coastal
Features Include:
- serene blue and white palette
- views over the water
- herb garden
- desk nook
- Thermidor appliances
Christine Kohut | Christine Kohut Interiors
Below is one kitchen that we did last year, using the appliances, cabinet hardware and lighting that I sourced from KBIS 2019. So going to KBIS was very much a part of this one. The matte white GE Cafe appliances with the bronze handles were so cool. – Christine Kohut
KBIS Sourced Features for this kitchen:
- GE Appliances
- Belwith Keeler hardware
- Generation Lighting
- Brizo Faucet
- Quartz Countertop
Here’s a completely different style kitchen, which adjoins to a colorful living room, the Glenwood Project designed by Christine Kohut Interiors.
Elizabeth Scruggs | Superior Construction and Design
Elizabeth Scruggs is both general contractor and interior decorator.
At KBIS I’m looking forward to networking and education at KBIS, and seeing all the new products available there, as well as at IBS, International Builders Show. – Elizabeth Scruggs
The Sanders Project
This project involved a typical home in the area built in the early 80’s – kitchen with a separate dining room. We knocked down the wall between and incorporated the two areas into one. Then we created a reading nook and mail area, a drop off zone where the former breakfast nook was. – Elizabeth Scruggs
The Franklin Road Project
A real 120-year-old farmhouse that the homeowner who is in his 70’s, grew up in, we knocked off the back of the original farmhouse and put on this addition. So while there is shiplap in some areas (not shown in image below) it is what would be expected in a home built at that time. Being a General Contractor I like to know as much as I can about the property and stay true to the era of the home. – Elizabeth Scruggs
Carla Aston | Carla Aston Designed
This is my own kitchen and one of my faves. I love the dramatic difference I made without doing major appliance and plumbing layout changes. The functionality of my kitchen improved dramatically with new cabinetry and relocating the pantry. Simplifying the finishes and creating high contrast helped blend it more cohesively with the rest of my home. – Carla Aston

Sheri Bruneau | Get It Together Blog
3 things Sheri Bruneau looks forward to this year at KBIS
- Healthy products – While I have many clients who love to use quartz, I’m being asked if there is ‘something else’ out there (other than solid wood) for counters – for both kitchens and baths.
- Plumbing – specific for the bathroom. Water conservation, smart solutions, etc.
- Kitchens – appliances. Again, smart appliances (and what exactly makes them so smart).
Coach Hill Project
This was one of my favorites because it was out with the old, in with the new. No walls were moved. We created almost double the storage/functional space by reconfiguring the new cabinets. This one was 100% on budget (no surprises, no changes, etc.) and 100% on time (no delays what-so-ever). – Sheri Bruneau
Modern Kitchen
I love the black and white with a touch of champagne bronze hardware on the black cabinets and black hardware on the white. – Sheri Bruneau
Laura D. Muller | Four Point Design Build
Calabasas
Redondo Beach, CA
I just love a black and white kitchen. Simple, yet dynamic! Love the texture, especially the antique brass against the dark lacquer cabinets, white glossy tile, and wide plank wood floors – Laura D. Muller
Monogram Suites Appliances
Westchester, CA
Bright white kitchens are always a popular classic whether it’s modern or farmhouse. This is a favorite because we used eclectic collected furniture and treasured art pieces to finish an otherwise monochromatic space. – Laura D. Muller
Sub Zero Appliances
Shanon Ggem | Ggem Design Co.
