30 Aug 5 Exciting Reasons to Add Art to Your Walls Now!
I’m back!! Our ten day summer road trip (more on that next week) was a great break from the Austin heat. You may remember this post from before I went on a vacation to Colorado, but since I’ve returned Modern Redux has extended their ART SALE through Labor Day and I do NOT want you to miss out!! So I’ve tweaked this post a bit for you to enjoy again.
Modern Redux, a wonderful little shop in Austin,TX, has the most amazing Mid-century Modern Home furnishings, accessories, and art you’ve seen in a long time. The above painting they actually commissioned by NYC artist Brian Messina. I LOVE how the height of the building in the painting complements the almost 2 ft high lamps.
Please consider following their Instagram @modernredux (we’ll be doing an Insta Giveaway this fall) and go online to their website www.ModernRedux.com to see all the fantastic art.
And remember Modern Redux SHIPS WORLDWIDE!!
So that means if you fall in love with a piece in this post, or online, you can have it shipped to you, or your client if you’re an interior designer, right away.
Owner Kelly Locker has been collecting for years. He is HUGELY knowledgeable, so please feel free to call the store and ask any questions. He conducted a wonderful docent tour of the shop’s art during their summer’s fantastic Open House. Don’t worry if you missed it, as they’ll be having more events this fall and holiday season.
Now, lucky for you, Modern Redux’ “Dog Days of Summer” August Art Sale has been extended.
All ART, both in-store and online, is 25% off through Labor Day!
Below are some of the beautiful art pieces at Modern Redux AND online. But before you check it out, you must know the 5 Exciting Reasons YOU should be hanging new art on your wall this fall.
5 EXCITING REASONS TO HANG ART ON YOUR WALL
- Art is inspiring. Who doesn’t love to be inspired by art? Art is moving. It makes us stop, look, think and feel. Sometimes it even can change one’s perspective on life.
- This art is colorful, rare and vintage. These paintings are full off interesting color and texture and in many cases are rare. One trio of paintings I particularly like Below are very unique, painted with sand on fabric by an unknown artist.
- The art is signed and collectible. In most cases, not all, these beautiful paintings or sketches are signed by a known, or unknown, artist. Signed pieces are more valuable to collectors, like a lithograph done by Mid-century modern artist, Miro, is a favorite.
- All art is 25% off through Labor Day. Modern Redux does not have many sales, so when they do, you want to snag a piece when you can because their inventory is constantly changing and that piece of art may be gone by the fall.
- Mid-century Modern Art looks fantastic in all interiors. Art is art. You do NOT….let me say this again….you do NOT have to have Mid-century modern furnishings or accessories in your home to add art to your walls. Mix it up!! Art adds character and beauty to your home. A beautiful painting can be appreciated by anyone and this art works in all interior spaces. Trust me, or ask your interior designer.
IMPORTANT to remember about art –
If you love a piece of art, no matter the artist or era, you can always find the perfect spot for it!
ABOUT MID-CENTURY MODERN ART AT MODERN REDUX (Note: If you read the prior post, please feel free to skip ahead to the art.)
Mid-century Modern encompasses a wide variety of design, from architecture to furnishings and art, during the 1940’s to 1960’s, and, on occasion, even during the 1970’s. This week’s blog features stunning art at Modern Redux, “Austin’s most trusted purveyor of the very best post-war international modernism.”
Modern Redux is a fantastic destination shop with a highly curated collection of Mid-century Modern home furnishings, accessories, German pottery, lighting and art. Every time I go into the shop I always come away inspired by some cool new piece owner Kelly Locker has brought in from their warehouse.
For those of you who have lived in Austin, you may remember a little shop on South Congress called Aqua Vintage. Owner Kelly Locker had that store for some time, took a break, and then recently partnered with a college friend, Douglas Smith, to open Modern Redux in February of this year. I first met Douglas on the 2019 Austin Modern Home Tour and then Kelly at the store’s Grand Opening in Feburary.
You definitely want to get to know these two! Known for a remarkable collection, Modern Redux ships to interior designers, homeowners, and collectors all over the world. I swear Kelly is like a walking encyclopedia on Mid-century modern! He shares his passion:
I grew up in the 60s, and fell in love with the art and design of the modern movement at an early age. The colors and energy of the abstractionists of the 40s and 50s, and the purity of modern design and architecture, has inspired and propelled me all my life and brought me to opening Modern Redux. It’s that pure, spiritual love of line and color, volume, and space – the harmony of the perfect arrangement of elements – that set me on this path and inspired me to want to share my love for Mid-century modern with our customers. For me, there is no more perfect inspiration in life! – Kelly Locker, Owner, Modern Redux.
Now onto the art.
TODAY LET’S PREVIEW A FEW OF MY FAVORITE MODERN REDUX ART PIECES.
VERA SIMONS ABSTRACT OIL ON CANVAS
“A large abstract oil on canvas by American artist and aeronautical pioneer, Vera Simons, probably painted in the 1970’s. Black and gold rings are imposed above a cloudscape that invokes the artist’s experience with aerial photography. The shimmering yellow and white foreshadow the use of metallic paints in Simons’ later work.”

“RED SAILS” OIL ON CANVAS
“A highly atmospheric maritime oil on canvas executed with palette knife. The lining has been restored. The gilt wood frame is original and exhibits minor finish loss [see photos] but presents well. The signature is illegible.”

BOB RANKIN ABSTRACT OIL
“Bright blocks of amber, ochre, umber, and vermillion contrast with deep browns in this masculine abstract oil on canvas by well-regarded North Carolina artist Bob Rankin. The Somber, urban color scheme is uncharacteristic of his work” Learn more about artist BOB RANKIN HERE.

Both of these spectacular paintings, completely different in nature, were on view (below) at the 2019 Modern Home Tour at Starlight Village in a room staged by Modern Redux.
EJ GOLD “STELLAR COMPOSTION 2”
“Signed acrylic action drip painting by artist, author, musician, and spiritual teacher EJ Gold. Newly framed.”

RICHARD SUSSMAN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST SCREEN PRINT ON WOVEN PAPER
“An abstract expressionist work on paper by Richard N. Sussman. This is number 17 out of a limited edition of 50. It is numbered and signed in pencil by the artist.”

JULES DUFFART “PIERROT”
“A refined and melancholy Paris School portrait of Pierrot by the French painter Jules Duffart in a style reminiscent of Bernard Buffet. Oil on canvas. The original liner shows its age.”

This last artwork is one of my favorites and is currently staged in a NEW Mid-century modern home in my neighborhood on my block. (I think the house is still for sale, and its gorgeous!) I always love seeing a painting in context, don’t you? All furniture, staged by, for this vignette is by Modern Redux.
“FLOCK OF BIRDS” OIL ON CANVAS
“This appealing oil was probably painted in the 1960’s. A high-contrast color palette—which includes a rich, powdery turquoise pastel—creates a moderated chiaroscuro. We think its composition and flattened perspective invoke Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles D’Avignon.” Do the primitivist elements seen in some of the cubist forms wink at the dinosaurian origin of birds?”

PORTRAIT OF WOMAN WITH BIRD – OIL & SAND ON FABRIC
“Cubist portrait of a woman cradling a bird executed in oil on fabric. The highly impastoed, sculptural surface was achieved by the addition of sand to the paint. Possibly dated 1991; we suspect the signature is in a non-Latin alphabet. The handsome oak frame is new. [One of a trio.]”

I don’t know about you, but seeing some Art Deco architecture and a Mid-century Modern camper on our vacation got me really excited to come back to Modern Redux’ magnificent art and furnishings. And to now know they’re continuing the sale is even better!
